The 4th edition of the flagship smart manufacturing conference convened OEMs, Tier-1 suppliers, technology providers, researchers and policymakers to address AI, digitalisation and sustainability across the automotive value chain.

    June 5, 2026 | Mumbai, India

For decades, automotive manufacturing has been measured by scale. Production volumes, plant capacity, supply-chain reach and assembly efficiency were often the benchmarks that defined success.

Today, the conversation is becoming far more complex.

The modern automobile is increasingly a convergence of software, electronics, advanced materials, connectivity and engineering. As vehicles become smarter, the factories producing them are undergoing a transformation of their own. Artificial intelligence, predictive analytics, automation, digital twins and connected manufacturing systems are beginning to influence decisions that were once entirely dependent on human supervision and conventional production planning.

This transition was at the heart of discussions during the fourth edition of ACMA Automotive Smart Manufacturing THINK TURF 2026, held on June 5 at Le Royal Méridien, Chennai.

Hosted by the Automotive Component Manufacturers Association of India (ACMA) Mobility Foundation, the conference brought together automotive manufacturers, component suppliers, researchers and policymakers to discuss the future of manufacturing within one of the world’s most important industries.

    The timing is particularly significant.

Global vehicle production continues to remain between 85 and 90 million units annually. India, meanwhile, has firmly established itself among the leading automotive manufacturing nations, producing more than 6.4 million vehicles every year. Passenger vehicle production has crossed 5.3 million units, commercial vehicle output exceeds 1.1 million units and annual two-wheeler production regularly surpasses 22 million units.

Such numbers tell only part of the story.

Behind every vehicle rolling off an assembly line today lies an increasingly sophisticated manufacturing ecosystem. Vehicle manufacturers are simultaneously dealing with electrification, software integration, sustainability targets, changing customer expectations and evolving supply-chain dynamics. The result is growing interest in solutions capable of delivering greater visibility, faster decision-making and higher levels of manufacturing agility.

A recurring theme throughout THINK TURF 2026 was the growing importance of the factory as a strategic business asset.

Sessions on Industry 4.0 and artificial intelligence explored how data is increasingly becoming a manufacturing resource. Discussions centred on AI-enabled quality systems, predictive maintenance, factory-wide analytics and digital tools capable of helping organisations respond more effectively to production challenges.

Next-generation mobility also featured prominently throughout the conference. Industry leaders discussed electric vehicle manufacturing, battery systems and lightweight materials, all of which are introducing new production requirements across the automotive value chain.

Sustainability formed another important pillar of discussion. Manufacturers are increasingly balancing productivity goals with expectations around energy efficiency, carbon reduction and environmentally responsible production practices. For many companies, sustainability has evolved beyond a compliance requirement and is becoming a significant business consideration.

The conference brought together senior leaders from some of the automotive sector’s most prominent manufacturers and suppliers, including Daimler India Commercial Vehicle, Delphi TVS Technologies, Wheels India, TVS Next, Renault Nissan Technology & Business Centre, Valeo India, Saint-Gobain India, Stellantis India, Rane Madras, Hindalco Industries, JK Tyre, Sona Comstar, CEAT, Forvia Clean Mobility India, Caterpillar ICS Division and Uno Minda Group.

Among the distinguished speakers were Mr. Aditya Ganesh of Rane Madras Limited, Mr. Muthu Maruthachalam C of Daimler India Commercial Vehicle, Mr. Viswanathan A of Delphi TVS Technologies Ltd, Mr. Murali Vaidyanathan of Wheels India Ltd, Mr. Krishna Kumar of TVS Next Limited, Mr. Arun Mageswaran of Renault Nissan Technology & Business Centre, Mr. Jayakumar G of Valeo India Pvt. Ltd., Mr. Sakthivadivel R of Saint-Gobain India Limited, Mr. Sivaramakirushnan Jayaraman of Stellantis India Private Limited and Dr. Rajkumar Swaminathan of Rane (Madras) Ltd., alongside several other industry leaders representing manufacturing and engineering firms.

The conference was supported by Hindalco Industries Limited as Associate Partner, with MicroGenesis and TVS Next participating as Gold Partners. The Centre of Excellence in Advanced Automotive Research (CAAR), IIT Madras, contributed as Knowledge Partner, while the Global Automotive Research Centre participated as Supporting Partner.

Representing more than 1,000 member companies accounting for over 85% of the organised auto-component sector’s turnover, ACMA remains an influential institution within India’s automotive ecosystem. As manufacturing undergoes significant change, industry platforms such as THINK TURF are increasingly becoming forums where manufacturers compare experiences, evaluate emerging solutions and assess the practical implications of transformation.

Perhaps the strongest takeaway from the discussions in Chennai was that the future of automotive manufacturing will be determined by factors extending well beyond machinery and production capacity. Data, digital integration, intelligent systems and sustainability considerations are steadily becoming part of everyday manufacturing conversations.

The competitive advantage of the future may emerge as much from software and factory intelligence as it does from engineering and production expertise. For an industry that has repeatedly reinvented manufacturing over the past century, that transition is becoming increasingly visible across automotive factories worldwide.
